I have been working in the music industry for 25 years at Rough Trade / Groove Attack, and I started out as a DJ in the 90s at the legendary Fiz Oblon in Bippen, Germany.

Mein Name ist Frank Thane
Ich bin Jahrgang 1970 und aufgewachsen in Quakenbrück (Home of RadioArtland), seit 2001 lebe ich in Hamburg.
Ich war über 25 Jahre in der Musikindustrie, davon die meiste Zeit bei Rough Trade/ Groove Attack tätig. Mittlerweile genieße ich das Leben und die Musik in der schönsten Stadt.
Musik hat mich schon mein ganzes Leben begleitet. Begonnen hat alles im legendären Fiz Oblon in Bippen wo ich meine Jugend verbracht habe. Die Musik und die DJ’s fand ich unfassbar cool, dass wollte ich auch machen. Anfang der 90er hatte ich dann meinen ersten DJ-Job im Fiz Oblon erst mal legte ich am Mittwoch auf und später dann auch Freitag und Samstag. Es folgten noch einige weitere DJ-Stationen u.a. in der Sputnikhalle in Münster, Toaster in Fürstenau. Meinen ersten Job hatte ich während des Studiums in einem Plattenladen (ELPI) in Münster. Schnell war klar, dass mich der Plattenladen und die Musik mehr reizten als das Studium.
Mitte der 90er habe ich dann als freier Handelsvertreter/Außendienst bei einem kleinen Indie-Vertrieb (Fire Engine)meinen ersten Job in der Musikindustrie begonnen, danach 1997 der erste richtige Job mit Firmenwagen und allem drum und dran bei Connected Music in Hamburg und dann ab 2001 Außendienst bei Rough Trade in Herne später dann Köln. Schallplatten sammeln wurde eine Leidenschaft ich saß an der Quelle und wöchentlich kamen die Muster frei Haus mit der Post.
Eine zweite Leidenschaft waren Konzerte. Eins meiner Lieblingskonzert-Erlebnisse war noch zu meiner Plattenladenzeit in Münster das Konzert der Lemonheads / Soul Asylum 1993 im PC69 in Bielefeld. Mein Begleiter kannte die Tourmanagerin der Lemonheads und so saßen wir nach dem Konzert im Backstage-Wohnwagen zusammen mit den Lemonheads und rauchten mit der Band mehrere Sportzigaretten. Evan Dando sagte immer, wenn es ihm nicht schnell genug ging: “Don’t bogart that joint”.
Weitere Highlights sind diverse Meet and Greet mit Nick Cave, Garbage, Johnny Marr, Fettes Brot, Katie Melua, Alt-J, Cro, Editors uva.
Heute gehe ich immer noch oft und gerne auf Konzerte, vor allem ins Knust oder in die Fabrik hier in Hamburg, aber auch mal in die Elbphilharmonie, wenn da jemand Interessantes spielt. Da ich seit 2017 im Rollstuhl sitze, ist es oft herausfordernd, da die meisten kleineren Clubs in Hamburg nicht unbedingt mit Barrierefreiheit glänzen.
Meine zweite große Leidenschaft ist der FC St.Pauli. Am Millerntor findet man mich jedes zweite Wochenende und das seit 1990.
In meiner Sendung „Ball of Confusion” spiele ich die aktuellen Neuerscheinungen, ein Mix aus Off-Pop / Indietronica / Indie-Rock / Indie-Dance
… No genre is safe! … regelmäßig neue Alben und Songs gemischt mit ein paar alten Songs / Klassikern … Die Sendung läuft jeden Montag von 20-22 Uhr Live auf RadioArtland.

My name is Frank Thane
I was born in 1970 and grew up in Quakenbrück (home of RadioArtland), and I have been living in Hamburg since 2001.
I worked in the music industry for over 25 years, most of that time at Rough Trade/Groove Attack. Now I enjoy life and music in the most beautiful city.
Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. It all started at the legendary Fiz Oblon in Bippen, where I spent my youth. I thought the music and the DJs were incredibly cool, and I wanted to do that too. In the early 90s, I got my first DJ job at Fiz Oblon, where I started out playing on Wednesdays and later on Fridays and Saturdays as well. This was followed by several other DJ gigs, including at the Sputnikhalle in Münster and Toaster in Fürstenau. I had my first job while studying at a record store (ELPI) in Münster. It quickly became clear that the record store and music appealed to me more than my studies.
In the mid-90s, I started my first job in the music industry as a freelance sales representative/field sales representative at a small indie distribution company (Fire Engine), followed in 1997 by my first real job with a company car and all the trimmings at Connected Music in Hamburg, and then from 2001 as a field sales representative at Rough Trade in Herne and later in Cologne. Collecting records became a passion. I was at the source and every week the samples arrived free of charge in the mail.
A second passion was concerts. One of my favorite concert experiences was during my time at the record store in Münster, the concert of the Lemonheads / Soul Asylum in 1993 at PC69 in Bielefeld. My companion knew the tour manager of the Lemonheads, so after the concert we sat in the backstage trailer with the Lemonheads and smoked several cigarettes with the band. Evan Dando always said when things weren’t going fast enough for him: “Don’t bogart that joint.”
Other highlights include various meet and greets with Nick Cave, Garbage, Johnny Marr, Fettes Brot, Katie Melua, Alt-J, Cro, Editors, and many more.
Today, I still enjoy going to concerts, especially at Knust or Fabrik here in Hamburg, but also at the Elbphilharmonie when someone interesting is playing.
Since I’ve been in a wheelchair since 2017, it’s often challenging because most of the smaller clubs in Hamburg aren’t exactly known for their accessibility.
My second great passion is FC St. Pauli. You’ll find me at the Millerntor every other weekend, and have been since 1990.
On my show “Ball of Confusion”, I play the latest releases, a mix of off-pop / indietronica / indie rock / indie dance…
No genre is safe! … regularly new albums and songs mixed with a few old songs / classics … The show airs every Monday from 8-10 p.m. live on RadioArtland.

Radio Artland läuft inzwischen seit etwa 5 Jahren. Angefangen haben wir in einer Bar, die während der Corona-Zeit geschlossen war — als Möglichkeit, mit Menschen in Kontakt zu bleiben, die sich nicht persönlich treffen konnten. Seitdem sind wir mit großartigen DJs, einer Vielfalt an Stilen und Genres und — vor allem — einer fantastischen Hörergemeinschaft gewachsen.

Radio Artland has now been running for about 5 years. We started in a bar that was closed during Covid — as a way to stay connected with people who couldn’t meet up in person. Since then, we’ve grown with wonderful DJs, a variety of styles and genres, and — most importantly — a fantastic listening community.
